Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping, and When It Is Actually Dangerous

A breaker doing its job is not a defect. But there are three very different reasons one trips, and telling them apart tells you whether you can reset it or need to stop touching it.

A tripping breaker is a symptom, not the disease. The breaker is the cheapest, most reliable safety device in your house, and it opened because something asked it to. The useful question is which of three things happened.

1. Overload: too much on one circuit

This is the most common and the least alarming. A 15 amp circuit carries about 1,800 watts, and code says continuous load should stay under 80 percent of that. A space heater alone can eat 1,500 watts. Add a hair dryer, a microwave, or a shop vac on the same circuit and the breaker opens.

The tell: it trips when you turn on a specific high draw appliance, and it takes a few seconds to a minute rather than instantly. The fix is to move the load to another circuit, or have us add a dedicated circuit for it. Do not swap in a bigger breaker. The breaker is sized to protect the wire, and a 20 amp breaker on 14 gauge wire is how house fires start.

2. Short circuit: hot touching neutral or ground

The tell: it trips instantly and hard, sometimes with a pop, a spark, or a burnt smell. Often it happens the moment you plug something in or flip a specific switch. Unplug everything on that circuit and try one reset. If it holds, plug items back one at a time until it trips and you have found the bad appliance or cord. If it trips with nothing plugged in, stop. That is wiring, and it needs a licensed electrician.

3. Ground fault or arc fault

GFCI outlets and breakers protect people in wet locations: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, exteriors. AFCI breakers detect arcing, the sputtering connection inside a wall that starts fires. Newer Utah homes have AFCI protection on most living space circuits, and they are more sensitive than a standard breaker by design.

  • A GFCI tripping only when it rains or after you use an outdoor outlet usually means water is getting in somewhere
  • An AFCI that trips randomly with no obvious load can indicate a loose backstab connection at an outlet, a stapled nick in a cable, or a failing device
  • A GFCI that will not reset at all with nothing plugged in has either failed or is protecting a real fault downstream

Stop resetting and call if you see any of these

  • Burning, fishy, or hot plastic smell anywhere near the panel or an outlet
  • Scorch marks, discoloration, or melting on an outlet, switch, or breaker
  • The panel or a breaker feels warm to the touch
  • Buzzing or crackling from the panel
  • The same breaker trips repeatedly within minutes even with everything unplugged
  • The main breaker trips, which is never a routine event

Repeatedly resetting a breaker that is protecting a real fault defeats the one device standing between a wiring problem and a fire. Two resets is a diagnostic. Ten is a gamble.

Older Wasatch Front homes: a note on panels

If your home was built before the mid 1990s, check the brand on the panel door. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip when they should, and most insurers and inspectors flag them. If you have one, a replacement is worth pricing out even if nothing is currently misbehaving.
